Missouri’s Choice is a starter/grower pellet made from locally-grown forages (grasses, clovers and alfalfa), processed grain by-products, grain products and plant protein products fortified with calcium, salt, trace minerals (cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, selenium and zinc) and vitamins A, D and E. A citric acid fermentation biomass is included for stress alleviation in weaning and receiving cattle and digestive stimulation in growing cattle. These microbials assist in the utilization of both fiber and starch, creating a favorable performance response at both high and low roughage intakes. The net energy available for gain (NEg) from this product is 0.51 mcal/lb, which is two to three times higher than most hays, two times higher than early season pasture grasses, or three times higher than late season grasses.
Missouri’s Choice may be fed free-choice or hand-fed at 1 to 2 lb. per 100 lb. of bodyweight for beef cattle or dairy replacements in all phases of growth. It can be used as a creep feed, weaning or receiving feed, or growing feed, and should be fed with roughage at a level to achieve the desired rate of gain. The table below outlines its utility in a range of applications. Actual results may vary depending upon genetics, feed quality, feeding management, and supportive health protocols.
|Roughage Source||Missouri's Choice Pellet Intake||Projected Rate of Gain, lb.|
|Creep feeding calves||90 - 120 days before weaning||Vegetative Pasture||3-4 lb/calf/day||Additional 0.3 lb.|
|Dormant pasture||7-9 lb/calf/day||Additional 0.6 lb.|
|Preconditioning or backgrounding calves*||450 - 750 lb. bodyweight||Grass hay/pasture||1-2 lb per 100 lb of bodywt||1.5 – 2.2|
|Corn silage||1-2 lb per 100 lb of bodywt||2.3 – 2.5|
|Receiving yearlings*||750 - 800 lb. bodyweight||Grass hay/pasture||1-2 lb per 100 lb of bodywt||1.6 – 2.3|
|Corn silage||1-2 lb per 100 lb of bodywt||2.4 – 2.6|
*Free-choice feeding of this pellet to preconditioning or backgrounding calves weighing 450-750 lb., or receiving yearlings weighing 750-800 lb., will result in a daily gain of approximately 2.6 lb. In both cases, cattle should also have free-choice access to grass hay or pasture.
Missouri’s Choice was developed to provide a lower cost yet effective and safe way to start cattle. Soy hulls, which are used extensively in competitive feeds of this type, provide very little assurance of safety. Although soy hulls are relatively high in fiber, they impart virtually no roughage or “scratch” effect, which is crucial to rumen health.
